1 | So boring. I enjoyed the first book but this one really didn't work for me. The story, characters, and relationships all fell flat. |

3 | -The plot dragged and dragged, I was waiting for something exciting to happen but nothing did. The main baddie/problem was some kind of sleeping sickness caused by ghosts that were greedy for dreams - it just wasn't interesting. At least the serial killer ghost in the first book was somewhat creepy and gave things a mysterious and dark edge, unlike the ghosts/sleeping sickness which wasn't even the slightest bit scary or interesting. |

6 | This cover change is one of the most terrible changes I have ever seen in my life. Way to go from a unique and different cover to boring run of the mill garbage. Excuse me while I vomit. |

8 | I NEED BOOK THREE RIGHT NOW!! I just stayed up past 5:30 am finishing this novel because I honestly couldn't put it down. Libba Bray has managed to ensnare me again with her lyrical writing and fantastic characters and storyline. The constant release date push backs made this well worth the wait even though I'm reading an e-arc I can't wait for my physical copy to arrive so I can reread it already. Took me awhile for finish but definitely well worth it. This is becoming one of my favorite series. :) |

10 | Lair of Dreams like everything else Miss Bray writes is mind-boggling. It's big. It's insanely atmospheric and it's creeptastic. |

---|
12 | Three years of waiting, but Lair of Dreams was so well worth it. Libba Bray has such magical prose – the book was entirely atmospheric, combining physical descriptions with more emotional, ideological and supernatural elements for a rich reading experience. |

14 | Cover redesign gone wrong. This is terrible and sad. |
---|
15 | |
---|
16 | I still can't process why they redesigned this cover. This is by far the ugliest redesign EVER! I'm fine with othe redesign most of the time, but this is making me furious. |

---|
18 | My first of many complaints is: why is the cover so damn ugly? The first edition of the Diviners cover – art deco, black and gold, with the eye motif, was gorgeous and evocative and fit perfectly with the mood and atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties. So my question to Hachette: why? |

20 | These books are so deliciously frightening! I love the 1920s setting and the thrilling supernatural happenings within it. Even though I've only read two of these books, I can confidently come to this conclusion: They never disappoint. |

22 | PROS |
---|
23 | 1. Libba Bray's gift of scene-setting is, as usual, masterful. She establishes mood very well. |
---|
24 | 2. Her characters are, for better or for worse, distinct and memorable. |
---|
25 | 3. She's obviously done her research into the time and place. |

26 | |
---|
27 | CONS |
---|
28 | 1. My willing suspension of disbelief was stretched to the breaking point by her modern-minded, tolerant cast of main characters. One or two might've been believable, but nobody seemed to have any problem hanging out with near-strangers of other races, sexes, sexual orientations, and religions. In a book set in the 1920s, this goes beyond unlikely into laughably stupid. Ling's acceptance of Henry stands out; this girl was raised in a mix of traditional Catholicism and Chinese culture, yet she cast aside her beliefs about homosexuality because Henry was nice and funny. If that was actually how it worked, bigotry wouldn't exist. I understand that Libba wanted to explore the heavy themes of eugenics, LGBT acceptance, and racism, but this isn't the way to do it. |

30 | Am I the only one bothered by the fact that Memphis was excluded from both covers? |
---|
31 | I'd hesitate to carelessly play the racism card, but really, he's also a main character and the only black kid in the story--aside from his brother, of course. |
---|
32 | Are there no teen black models? |
---|
33 | That really bothers me. |
---|
34 | |
---|
35 | Not as good as the first book in the series. The main character Evie becomes selfish and unlikable, and also drowned out by the many other protagonists. The mystery was not acknowledged by the protagonists until the very end of the book, which made the whole story feel like one overly long set up. A quick read, and still enjoyable, I hope the following book will be faster paced and fuller in story. |
